The traffic along Winnie Mandela Drive? Likely caused by Cats. Not just any cats...Jellicle Cats. The 2026 run at Montecasino has been nothing short of a Jellicle Ball brought to life. From the moment the lights hit, the costumes, striking and faithful to the original, announce a production that knows its legacy. Each costume and makeup detail transports the audience into the whimsical yet disciplined world of the Jellicles. The lighting design introduces the cats with flair, highlighting personalities and movements with subtle precision. The live orchestra is meticulous, and not a single beat is missed, underscoring the seamless coordination between musicians, conductor, and performers. Impeccable choreography ensures the audience remains rapt from first curtain to last bow, with every formation and ensemble number executed with precision.

Standouts naturally emerge. Cindy Ann Abrahams’ Grizabella is heartbreakingly poised, her rendition capturing both vulnerability and dignity, a performance worthy of standing alongside the likes of Elaine Paige. Dylan Janse van Rensburg’s Rum-Tum-Tugger charms with playful, flirty confidence, bringing new quirks to a classic character while remaining true to the original spirit. Add Stephan van der Walt, Michael Fullard, and Logan Timbre to the mix, and the stage radiates feline energy, intent, and undeniable flair, creating a captivating ensemble dynamic that elevates every scene.
The set, lighting, and sound design all deserve praise. From the introduction of the cats to the climactic Jellicle Ball, the production maintains a flawless balance of spectacle and intimacy. Each lighting cue, costume movement, and sound effect feels intentional, serving the story and enhancing the audience’s immersion.
Some may argue Cats is an old favourite, but this run proves why classics matter. Every element, from direction and design to performance, is carefully considered, cohesive, and spectacularly executed. For both new audiences and seasoned theatre-goers, this production is a masterclass in bringing a global favourite to South African stages, reminding us why this show continues to charm and thrill audiences across generations.
