South African Humour at it's best : Die Kantoor

Based on the beloved format of The Office, Die Kantoor brings the mockumentary style home to South Africa, capturing all the awkwardness, humour, and everyday absurdities of the local workplace. From quirky colleagues to office politics, it’s a hilarious reflection of our own offices, packed with that uniquely South African flair. The show also doesn’t shy away from the bigger issues, race, inequalities, and workplace dynamics are woven naturally into the comedy, making it feel both real and relatable. And honestly, it proves once again that South Africans can pull laughter out of absolutely anything.

The cast is an absolute delight. Schalk Bezuidenhout nails every awkward beat, Albert Pretorius is effortlessly charming, and Lida Botha owns every scene she’s in. Ilse Oppelt brings a perfect mix of wit and warmth, Daniah De Villiers has a spark that lights up the screen, and Gert du Plessis delivers punch after punch of comedic brilliance. The rest of the cast are fantastic too, and we’re genuinely excited to get to know them better as the series unfolds.

Technically, it’s just as impressive. The editing and filming stay wonderfully close to the original Office style, keeping all the mockumentary charm, while the script by Bennie Fourie, Desire Gardner, and Ryan Metcalfe makes sure every scene lands perfectly, with clever jokes and spot-on comedic timing.

All in all, Die Kantoor is funny, clever, and warm, a perfect example of how South African humour can turn even the most uncomfortable realities into something we can laugh at together!
